Any tuning is ‘right’. However, I found taking off the E string and tuning to open G, like Keef and Chris Rea, gave the most pleasing results (you can also leave the E string on and down tune it to D). You can get some nice chord voicings by fretting notes behind the slide. If you haven’t already, check out Sonny Landreth, IMO the king of slide.

No, it’s a replacement. I initially changed to a contoured body as I was finding the original pine body a bit heavy and fancied something a bit more colourful. I’ve been giving this some thought and the only idea I’ve had that has, in my mind, any potential is to team up with a guitar shop with national coverage (I’m thinking GuitarGuitar) and offer them free advertising space on the site in return for the same on their site and perhaps have their shop staff mention it to shop customers. I’m sure it could end up being a minefield, but it’s all I have, short of physically making my guitar playing chums sign up.

Nothing beyond the usual, as good as one I previously owned and that had a roller bridge.

IMO the ‘made in’ label shouldn’t put you off at all. China makes decent instruments, both my Squier CV Tele and Epiphone Casino Coupé are MIC and punch well above their price tags. The Gretschs are no different, at least the ones I’ve played. It seems that when China makes proper, licensed products, rather than uncontrolled rip offs from spurious factories, the quality is good. For complete transparency, I didn’t buy the 5420, although it was a very close shave. Instead, I saved myself a big chunk of change and just bought a Bigsby for my Epi...

Trying to nail the tone of someone as iconic as Brian May’s is difficult. Obviously he has the Red Special, but a lot of the recorded tone comes/came from the small ‘Deacy’ amp made by JD (there are of course other factors combining to the whole). My only suggestion would be an fx pedal or multi fx that feature signature tones as presets. A quick Google search came up with the Joyo ACtone as a possible. Hopefully, some others will be able to add to list of suggestions.

I feel it’s a chicken and egg situation. I visit everyday but rarely see anything new, which can only be brought about by a larger membership and folks posting more. Perhaps there are already too many other guitar sites, or six stringers are less community centric than their low end cousins? I’ve tried to encourage axe wielding friends to join, but to no avail .

Iconic Gibson. Ergonomically useless, but cool as a polar bear with refrigerated underwear. As it apparently needs so much work and your proposed usage level, it might be worth moving it on, investing in a Tele and using the leftover £s for whatever (I’m sure there’d be a surplus).

Nothing worth doing should be easy, as there would be no sense of accomplishment. Stick with it, you won’t be disappointed. Getting those callouses is a real badge of honour with other benefits outside of playing. Picking up hot drinks or plates without flinching springs to mind. Although my favourite was removing a large wasp from a school staff room; I held it gently by its wings and watched it try and repeatedly sting my fingertips to no avail. The small, angry beast was released through a window, where it flew away unharmed to the amazed faces of my colleagues.

Wouldn’t that be a marvellous thing, not just for amps, but for all musical equipment. Seems too niche to be a viable business proposition though.

Tube amps and parcel chuckers do not good bedfellows make. I’ve had poor experiences of various couriers, not because of handling, but because of their tendency to fake signatures and just leave the delivery out in the open. If it’s feasible, transport the amp yourself, then you can make sure it’s showed firmly and safely and not have to worry about it not actually getting there.
