I don't have an unmodified strat. I see them as a modding platform primarily. The ones I have built are all HSS or HSH apart from the Nile Rodges sig. I'm not a fan of the bridge pickup and the older strats I've heard are so weak sounding that I have to adjust the entire rig around them. So my approach has been more about lifting the weaknesses of the strat up to the standard of my other guitars so using them doesn't reqiure so much faff. I like the neck pickup sound in my strats but they have dimarzio, seymour duncan and EMG pickups - apart from the Nile strat which has vintage Fender noiseless (and they are also a little feeble sounding even after they replaced some faithful replica fifties pickups which were so anaemic they were next to useless...so I won't be using them again).

Same. To be fair, the 5 series are really, really good and the price difference between a 5420 and 6120 is huge and the law of diminishing returns says you’ll not be getting an awful lot more. 5420, plus some TV Jones pickups and you’ll be pretty much 95% of the way there, for a fraction of the cost.

Stratocaster... Emperor's new clothes?

Oh, yes. A couple of Gretsches are very much on my wants list, but it's gonig to be a while before I can raise the cash. 5xxx series - I doubt, shy of a stupid lottery win, I could justify the 6xxx series. -

I hear you. I'm definitely a P Bass man.... but that neck on a J bass.... My first bass (still owned) was a Squier Precision Bass Special. I realised quickly I can well live without the J pickup, as long as the single split P pickup has a decent tone knob, but the J-style neck on that guitar is a joy. One day I would adore to build a P bass with a J neck, P-set-up, and a firebird or RD shaped body (but other than shape, entirely in the Fender P style). -

I’ve learnt pretty all I know about Fender offset guitars from Mike Adam’s, AKA puisheen, on YouTube and Instagram. -

Interesting - I had not noticed that. Amusingly, the tech mentioned that though he is a Gibson man he has often coveted Jaguars when they've come in, and whilst dealing with this he finally succumbed to the GAS and ordered a Fender custom shop model. Apparently, according to what I have read, they were originally meant to be a luxury model to poach Gibson's customers. -

Nice. I see it has a Mustang bridge, a sensible upgrade from the standard, threaded affair. -

I realise that I forgot to list the amp I have at https://www.basschat.co.uk/topic/520908-vox-vx50-gtv-guitar-amp/ here as well. A review of this amp can be seen here, and Vox's product page is worth a look. As the reviewer mentions, this amp is both small and light (< 5kg) and also loud; I've used it for several jams and also a gig (all with a drummer and various saxes etc.) and it has been fine. I never much liked the tone (a bit too rock) or used the effects, so I've replaced it with the recently-discontinued jazz version whilst I still can. I've not included postage in the price as I don't know how much it will be, but in the event of anyone being interested we can discuss options. The box is still present and I'll put in the unused new power supply from the replacement amp (it's identical). There are a couple of small marks on the bottom of the grill surround (pictured) but otherwise it's in good condition and all working.

That is indeed my plan. In addition to some fret and electronics work a new plate on the front should be involved. -

In the end I was able to bag a nice Japanese Fender, which is now having some work done on it. -

For anybody considering a Goldo DG offset tremolo I got it to work great (there’s nothing on their website or YouTube I’ve looked none stop) I placed an long Allen key under the D shaped string anchor point leaving just enough room for the ball ends to go in the tight fit, brought all the strings to tension from the low to high E equally then A to B etc and it set the “floating point “ then removed the Allen key and tuned to pitch, voila !!!! If everyone is aware of the principle then great but I wasn’t. There’s more travel with this unit than standard offset ones though all the nut groove attention needs to be done like any other trem .

I just thought what replies I had(about 4) stays on the page or do they self delete? The Jazzmaster style guitars are an acquired taste, I didn’t like them at all years ago but now I do, and I like the simplicity and quirky trem which I’ve seen keep very much in tune if it’s been set up ok

I don’t have any experience with the Jag/JM trem I'm afraid, although I am intrigued by them. I think that I'm probably not alone here and perhaps why there has been a dearth or replies, that and it being a week with Christmas right in the middle (what day is it?).

Hi all, I cant find any replies to this post, they seem to have disappeared, thanks in advance if anyone knows why

I’ve never owned a Strat, but on the occasions I’ve played one I find the position of the volume knob is right in the way and I alter the volume probably turning myself off as I play. I am only a strummer. So it’s definitely not on my wish list. -

Hi all, I’ve fitted this tremolo a few hours ago but even though I depress the arm I struggle like hell to fit the string ball end in so far I have to take the tremolo off completely to do it , am I missing something? Sorry to be a clueless numbnuts

Filter-trons are an interesting ‘bucker option. Unlike PAF types, they don’t have that muddy honk.
