  1. I'm a bit confused. Are you talking about curling your thumb over the top of the neck to fret the thick E string? You say you can't hit the first string with your thumb, but that would be the thinnest string, so I'm not sure why you'd be using your thumb on it. I'm sure you know about Tony Iommi, of Black Sabbath and how he lost the tips of his fingers on his fretting hand. He made prosthetic tips and changed the way he played to accommodate it. Also, Django Reinhardt lost the use of his ring and index fingers so modified the way he played.

  2. Have you looked JustinGuitar on YouTube? He also has a website and does a full course of guitar tuition free. He does have a paid for app and seems books, but the free stuff will be more than enough to get you going. It m8ght even get your son interested again too.

Geordie Walker of Killing Joke comes to mind straight away. Not heard anyone else with his style and tone.

Nile Rodgers has a very recognisable sound as well that's very hard to copy just right.

There have been quite a few songs I've heard on the radio, in recent years and I've thought "that sounds like Nile Rodgers" and been right.

  4. Which guitarists would you say have the most distinctive sound? Recently, I was playing one of those "Heardle" games, where 1" of a song intro gets played and you have to guess the song and artist. If you can't or get it wrong, 2" gets played and so on. I didn't recognise the song but almost immediately recognised Tony Iommi's guitar playing.

  5. I've just thought of another good argument for physical shops. A few days ago none other than Mr Robert Plant called into Matchetts, in Belfast, to buy a harmonic. Yes a bona fide rock legend might buy something off your website, but you aren't going to be able to get him to pose for a photo. 😁

Having spent ages poring over the Ibanez web site, the two contenders are currently the AS73 or the AR520. I know the AR played well but I’ll check out the AS before I pull the trigger.

This is all assuming that I sell the two guitars I have in the marketplace, of course. 😁

And Harley’s have a great reputation - I assume that Thomann do them at close to cost just to get people through the virtual doors and into the habit of buying from them.

    Still amazing value though.

Yeah, certainly with the lower spec models, like the TE20. Some of their higher priced gear seems comparable with the likes of Squier, so definitely a loss leader or close to it.
