  1. It's a common misconception that Martin Barre, of Jethro Tull, invented the barre chord.

This is of course nonsense. He merely introduced them to so-called 'popular music', and as a result they became known as 'barre chords'.

Previously, they were known as 'dito appiccicoso' chords in classical guitar and lute.

I think it goes without saying to not use the screws provided! I went up to the biggest screw diameter I could get through the block of wood and close to the length of a drill bit. I've gone into solid brick, if you have a hollow wall try and find the studs.

    This!

I went over to check my brother's house when he was on holiday, and his '62 SG Junior was lying on the floor, face down. The hanger and pile of brick dust were on top of his Marshall head, which must have partly broken its fall. Miraculously, it was intact, and even in tune.

I don't know how I would have broken the news if it had been damaged.

Hi, I’m planning to go for what is advertised as a epiphone les Paul standard 2013 in wine red

only thing is the serial number when I ran it is an 2007…but they weren’t available in wine red in 07…the machine heads are grovers which matches a 2013 standard plus top pro but not the 07… all the other hardware also matches a 13 model… anyone any ideas ?

Are you remembering to include the letters before the S/N?

  4. I'm a bass player not a guitarist, so I don't want to spend silly £££ on a six-string. But my favourite guitarist is probably Neil Young Unfortunately I'm not a big fan of Les Pauls and semi-acoustics like his signature Gretsch White Falcon or a 335 are a bit steep. The Artcore* AS53 only cost £220, and when I tried it out in a shop it felt really nice so my agonising ended there.

That's pretty cheap for a semi-acoustic with a set neck. A very nice, playable neck with edge binding and a satin finish (shared with the rest of the guitar).

One of the ways the price is achieved is simplified electrics, vol, tone and a 3-way selector switch. I bought from a small shop (River Music, Ross on Wye) and the guitar was well set up, I don't know if it had been given any extra attention but I got the impression the owner fettles all the guitars that come through his shop. It was a delight to play and sounded great. He threw in a basic gig bag.

I pimped my ride by adding a scratchplate. My brother added icing to the cake by giving me a Gretsch bridge pickup, a set of Kluson tuners and some contemporary Gibson knobs he had changed for vintage ones I gave him some time before! I also swapped in a DiMarzio neck pickup he gave me decades ago, but fitted a brass cover to hide the green colour! Naturally it now sounds fantastic. I top-wrapped the tailpiece too 🙂

*There was some debate over whether or not these AS guitars are actually part of the respected 'Artcore' series, but the Ibanez website counts them in and specifically mentions them having an AS Artcore neck.

I’ve never played a short scale guitar (at least that I know of and certainly not in the last 40 years) and wondered if the GC collective has had any experience with them.

Only yesterday I was playing a Washburn Rover, OK it's acoustic but just like an SS bass it's incredibly fun to play because you don't have to work as hard. Ditto with the Gretsch Jim Dandy (they've just brought out a new version the 'Gin Rickey' which has a delightful pre-war style pickup across the soundhole.

I've got sucked into watching the Charismatic Voice. She doesn't do reaction videos as such, though there is a fair amount in there but she then dissects the technical aspects of singing which is interesting rather than just going OMG all the time.

I like her videos. The one on Unchained Melody is great. She did a good Dio one as well. There is a buzz in hearing a trained singer react to great rock/pop voices - but usually it's because the rock/pop singer got some decent voice training early on.

Rather than start a second youtube thread I decided to put this here. @Dad3353, if you feel it's appropriate you might consider setting up a new thread anyway (which would be fine by me).

It's a ground-up Les Paul rebuild, so not exactly a 'who do you watch..', but I hope you'll like it anyway.

Caution: most of the video has an awful muzak backing so you might want to mute the audio apart from the start and end sections.

    Enjoy:

Thanks, I learnt a lot from that.

Rick has a lot of interesting stuff to say, but he insists on shouting it instead!

There's a newsreader on Wales Today who could be his brother...

  9. I jammed with a guy who had one. He used it for transposing.

It was a tricky session - he was one of those people who transposes everything  to suit his voice. Do some people have a range of 1 1/2 octaves?

Ok so first things first I wanted to cut my new pickguard out...

Plan A was stupid as I clamped the original pickguard to the textures side of the metal which meant it didn't sit straight and my lines were messy...

Plan B I engage what little brain I have and clamped the original PG to the back of the metal sheet...where it's nice and smoooooooth!

I'm interested to hear about why those who are primarily basssists havearange of basses - or not. ... Inmy experience, bassists always seemed to be more satisfied with a smaller number of specialised basses than would be the case for guitar players, but I wonder if I'm wrong on that?

Err... I think we should break it to him gently lads.
