I do the same. Much prefer it. My problem was not breaking nails but rather a phobia I'd rip one off, or the high E would slide up between finger and nail like a cheesewire and pull it off. Never had a problem picking with the pads of my finger clawhammer style.

The other easy option would be to get some finger-picks that slide onto the end of the fingers. Come in metal or plastic. Cliff Gallup used metal ones with his Gretsch back in the 50s, if memory serves.

I dabble with the banjo and use metal finger picks in a claw hammer style

  2. I can stand and play and sing in front of any amount of people because it's rehearsed. What I hated was gaps between songs when my mate would say talk to them to fill in while I tune up. I would freeze and tell him to hurry the F up! Public speaking makes my skin crawl and any kind of ad libbing is impossible. I couldn't handle hecklers for instance, of which mercifully there were few.

  3. Hi there, I have been on Basschat for years now and am primarily a bass player. I played in a covers band as singer and bass player for many years. I always tinkered with guitar and own a Mex Fender Tele and a home made Strat and also a Taylor 214 acoustic. I would love to get better on the six string and wanted to join this forum for any help that I could get and possibly  try and find another guitar that I can get more serious on. Glad to be aboard and look forward to chatting with anyone who is interested
