I've tried my guitars through my Zoom B1on multi fx.
They only really sound good on the ultra clean or clean with a bit compression effects. You can get a nice clean funk tone.
I've also tried the basses through the G1on, and although almost all the preset effects sound horrible with a bass, there's four or five, mainly those that are mostly clean with a splash of reverb or a bit of delay that sound really good.

If there's a local repair/set up guy it might be worth popping in to see what they say.
However, as Old G says that looks worse than a bad set up and I doubt it left the factory with an action that high.

If your'e considering preowned instruments then you might be able to get a Mexican tele or strat for around or slightly over the £400 mark.
New I'd be looking at the usual Squiers and Epiphones but also at lower end Yamaha Pacificas and Revstars, but most of the bigger manufacturers such as Jackson and Ibanez all have models in that price range these days.

The only effects I ever really use on bass are envelope filter or a bit of compression.
I generally run my guitars through a multi fx pedal and it's very rare that I'll be using a completely clean tone, if nothing else I'll have the reverb on.

Yup! Contemplating a revstar just now!
I played the p90 model in a local music shop a couple of months ago.
Not only does it look fantastic, I really enjoyed playing it, it's just a great feeling guitar and the p90s offer something a bit different.

For purely aesthetic reasons I'm not at all keen on pau ferro, to the point that there's a whole load of Fenders in the current range that I wouldn't even consider because of the colour the fretboards. Shallow, I know.
Personally i think the dark stained board suits that particular guitar and colour better than an orangey natural pau ferro board would.
And it is a very nice looking guitar.
