After a lot of reading, YT videos and review trawling, I’ve just pulled the trigger on an Alvarez Artist. OM size, solid mahogany top and laminated mahogany back and sides.

Nobody within easy reach has one I can try so I’m taking a bit of a punt but I figure if it’s not what I’m hoping it will be, I can return it and I’m just down the cost of return shipping.

I did try a Cort, a couple of Yamahas and an Ibanez. Nice guitars all but there was something about each of them that put me off a bit.

What impresses me most is the sheer number of very good guitars available these days for £200-£300.

    Ooh, sounds interesting!

I get the impression there are more acoustic or electro acoustic guitars in this price range than solid bodies.

  2. I have an Alvarez acoustic bass and a lovely thing it is too. However, I did have to send the first one back as there were issues with unequal volume response between the strings, which I was going to have sorted locally, until my tech guy pointed out the bridge was off centre.

The replacement is much better, but the E string peg started coming out after restringing. Turns out the pegs lean forwards (ie towards the headstock). The peg has been fettled and seems stable enough now.

So in summary, lovely sounding and looking guitar, perhaps lacking a bit of attention to detail in the assembly process. I'd still buy another Alvarez, but would probably go for buying in person.

  3. ...a guitar obviously!

Hi, there - a couple of apologies:

    1. I've posted without introducing myself. Bit rude.

    2. I'm a moonlighter from Basschat.

I had a guitar at an earlier age than my first bass, but currently find myself without a proper 6 string. Unless you count the old Kimbara gathering dust in the attic and requiring a restring and probably a set of new tuners.

Currently arguing with myself over whether to get a nice electro acoustic or a semi acoustic. I figured signing up here might help (in encouraging me to buy one of each and a solid body electric to boot!).

  4. They stock them at Gear4music in York I think (you're Hull based...?), you just need to ring them with a day or twos notice to make sure they've got one on the showroom floor. The stock on their website is for online sales, so could be in their York shed or their European one.
