Bump for an old beauty!

I was also impressed with how JHS got that great spread of sounds into that one box! Good luck on your quest
-
I would suggest looking at the JHS Bonsai and deciding what to do then! In a nutshell it has 9 different TS modes and has all the classic sounds from some great variants.
The (amusing) Anderton's review on the JHS page gives you a good idea of what it does: https://www.jhspedals.com/products/guitar-pedals/bonsai/

I had one of these, the guys in the band were disappointed it didn't look like a Les Paul but it was a fantastic guitar. So much better than the 93 studio I replaced it with. Wish I had £850 to spare.
Thanks for the kind words and bump.

For songwriting/rhythm guitar/singing it's James Hetfield from Metallica for me. Just staggering what he has done and does.
For lead guitar work it's Stoke's very own Slash. What a great blend of styles and feel he created for all those GN'R songs

This guide looks pretty handy
Thanks Charic, off to read up now! Cheers.

I've had a fair few over the years:
Marshall JCM800 2210 (Twin channel 100 Watter) and '87 Silver Jubilee 2555 heads , Studio 15 and Jubilee 1x12 combos,
Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier & Hiwatt Hi Gain 50 heads.
Various cabs but stuck with a Marshall 1936 2x12 for years.
Currently got a Rivera Chubster 55 1x12 combo.
Would love to hear a Diezel VH4 in person though!
-
Sorry Charic, I don't currently own anything with the capability but let's say a Helix as that has my eye at the mo.
-
Ah jeez, showing my age and ignorance here but how the hell do these work?
I get that they are emulating speakers & cabs via EQ settings but how do you load them in and use them?
Thanks in advance!

Nothing colours the tone more than the speakers that are outputting the sound. The theory behind a FRFR setup is that there is a very clean (typically) transistor amp that remains clean and doesn't distort or sag. The modeller is outputting the capture sound of a guitar rig, complete with the coloured output of the speakers of the guitar cab. If you are then putting coloured speakers on the end of your modelled chain, you aren't hearing the model as it's intended.
What you are saying is true - you can do this... but it won't be as authentic as a true FRFR setup.
I have heard awful sounds with modellers plugged into guitar amps/setups so not interested in that scenario.
That said, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that method it's just not my cup of tea.
This is where the high quality 2 way powered speaker has it sussed in terms of replicating all the various colourations of sound.

But man, just looked and £1,250 is a lot of dosh

I gigged with the Friedman asm12 and various modellers - ax8, amplifire etc. Sounded great but it was an awkward box to move around.
I’ve used lots of active PA cabs in the past and all have been fairly decent - I would suggest you don’t scrimp on wattage - frfr can need a lot more headroom than traditional amps imo so I’d look at 500w+ cabs.
Thanks for the info John.
Just seen the weight of the Friedman and, er, yeah, not a lightweight solution
Also just watched the Anderton's FRFR shootout video and the Atomic CLR came out favourably for them.
Now if only Barefaced made a FRFR guitar cab!

So, I've been thinking about going the route of one of the above mentioned units but would like some advice, from experience, about a good powered speaker cab to go with them.
Basically what can do good reproductions and handle enough volume to play alongside an acoustic drum kit being whacked fairly hard?
I really like the look and spec's of the Friedman ASC-12...

Hello GC'ers,
Now withdrawn.
1979 Gibson The Paul.
It's made from Walnut with an Ebony fingerboard.
It's well used and gigged which the dings, bangs, scrapes and knocks show – A natural relic I like to think! The only non-original parts are the black Schaller strap lock buttons and it comes in an old, but fully working, SKB hard case (no key for the lock however).
That said the back of the neck and electronics are all in very good condition and it plays great. For completeness it was re-fretted at Chandler Guitars in Kew many years ago and plays like a dream as a result.
