It all started circa 2002 when I suddenly developed an urge to learn to play the guitar for some reason.

Off I went to the local guitar store and found the experience petrifying to say the least. It was full of people speaking a language I didn't understand and making noises on guitars that I had only heard people making on TV.

Anyway several pounds later, I left the said shop with a Wine Red Mexican Strat, a bag, a plectrum, a guitar lead and a Marshall practice amp.

For several months I read everything available, practiced until my fingers hurt and the end result was being able to play the E, A and D chords. I began to think that I needed to go into hospital and have all the fingers on my left hand broken and reset to be able to play the guitar properly.

Not being a stupid person? one day it dawned on me!. I actually could play the guitar, its just that I hadn't bought the one I could play yet.

Armed with this information I bought a Gibson, a PRS, a Clapton Strat, a USA Strat and fifteen amplifiers. Now you won't believe this but I still couldn't play any of them. They all went into retirement and I quite enjoyed being able to pick up a pint of beer again without my fingertips hurting!

The other day whilst looking for a USB cable I stumbled across those old instruments of the devil and stupidly decided to try my best to get some sort of meaningful sound out of at least one of them.

The quest begins again!!!!!!!!!!

note: no guitars or amps were harmed in any way during my practice sessions.

	Hi everyone,

I'm Antonio and I'm from Portugal. Started playing when I was twelve, up until 19-20, then stopped playing in a rock band for 20(!) years. Only played at home and family gatherings during that time.

It's been two years since I've (re)started, having a blast with my 40 something solo guitarist, 55 years old bass player and 52 years old drummer musician friends. I'm a rhythm guitar and main singer on a rock band, again! I'm 42, btw.

I play a Gretsch g2420 and a Epiphone Les Paul 100, both in vintage tobacco sunburst. My amp is a small valve Bantamp Bluejay with a Falcon 8' speaker, Jet series, love it. I've built a small pedal board, featuring a Electro Harmonix Crayon, a Tc Electronic Skysurfer, a Behringer Fx600, a Boss SY-200. It's simple and functional, has everything I need for now. Finally, I have my TC-helicon Voicelive Play, for the voice effects, use AKG and Shure mics. We have a small PA, a Mackie one, works great, for small venues.

	I'm having a blast!

Greeting everyone, glad I found this place! I'm a guitarist who's started playing bass as well around 3 years ago and I really enjoy both instruments. I do my own setups, repairs and part exchanges so am often selling parts off to buy new ones!
I'm looking forward to sharing knowledge and tips about guitars, setups, pickups and pedals!

Hi! It seems I joined a while ago but forgot. I started playing guyitar when I was in my teens back in the early/mid 70s the moved to bass. Now bandless on bass, I am about to pick up a guitar again for the first time in many years and have a few questions.

I have had a Mexican Fender Telecaster for some years, stashed away in its case, and just recently bought one of these for a few quid at a bootsale which now sports a Tonerider PAF pickup and some new tuners. Hope to find answers to questions!

With a 70th birthday approaching I have decided to learn the guitar! At the moment my practice consists of hurting my fingers but the toughening up process is the first challenge to be overcome, or so I have been told. I went to my local music and instruments store (shout-out to Intasound Music of Leicester) accompanied by a guy who has been a touring pro guitarist for years and came away with a Cort G200 + amp & accessories for a very reasonable price. My friends view, not a great guitar not a terrible one but eminently suitable for a learner. It sounded good to me when he played it in the shop! Recently I have been gifted a Squier Classic Vibe '60s Precision Bass. I think I have more the temperament of a Bassist, possibly? Once become proficient at holding down the strings I will be looking for a local teacher to give me lessons. That's my introduction. KTF!

	Hello

I’m Simon, 51 from the Southwest of the Uk and a complete noob with guitars and have a love hate relationship with my guitars.

I started practicing in December 23 so just over a year, self taught using Justin Guitar app and have reached the end of Level 1 of the beginners course (3 levels in beginner)

I know probably 8 chords and the sticky 3,4s they use a lot for Oasis songs.

I am currently learning songs, about 4/5 I am trying to improve on but it’s slow, I enjoy everything about Guitars, their history, watching videos online about how it all started, brands, woods used and the difference in sound all the while knowing every guitar is unique whatever it’s composition.

Strumming is my issue, up strums mainly, the sound rubbish to my ear.

Ive been playing Mad World, Get Lucky by Daft Punk, Songbird by Oasis, Stand by me and although it’s a bit beyond my level , Wonderwall as it trains my little finger (ouch)

I guess I’ve been at this part of my journey for several months now with little movement although I’ve just started to learn One by U2

Ive reverted to mainly downstroke at the moment to try and simplify my learning routine.

I also do a couple of basic starter scales, platonic or something it s called lol.

Anyway I’ve been looking for fresh inspiration and perhaps some pointers, I have found pointers given to me by Facebook groups utterly complicated and just no help at all.

I used to love forums and the slower pace, so fingers crossed.

BTW I have bad GAS, perhaps I could get to the stage where I know more songs the guitars I own………Yup

I am blessed to own two electrics and erm…..many acoustics which range from a project 1940s German parlour through to a 2023 Taylor……..

look forward to being part of the community I have questions galore

I am a musician and teacher based on the west coast of Ireland. I teach online lessons across Ireland, the UK and the rest of Europe. I play electric, Acoustic and Spanish guitar in a variety of styles. My influences are diverse, from Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd to John Williams, SRV, Rory Gallagher and Tommy Emmanuel.

Music was my 2nd love, but it's the one that never left me. Greetings and salutations.
so hello. As the title says I’m a complete newbie with the guitar. At 54 I got the bug to learn when my daughter started taking lessons in school. I’ve never played an instrument in my life but have always loved music. The closest I have been to having any “musical talent” has been working as a dj in various rock and metal clubs in the northwest of England, which I’ve done off and on since around 1995. Currently I share an Ibanez gio with my daughter but today I was gifted an epiphone Les Paul custom by an old friend of mine. It’s had a neck break but been repaired and plays great (in the right hands). I’m taking lessons at a local music school and I have the bug so bad! I try and get an hour a night practise but don’t always squeeze the time in, but I’m trying. Anyway, hello again. I’m looking forward to my journey and I have no doubt I’ll have lots of questions in the coming weeks.

	Hello,

Thought I'd finally join in on here from the other place, seeing as I play more guitar than bass these days. 'Enthusiastic power chord thrasher' probably best describes my approach, but I am trying to add a bit more finesse to my efforts. I love messing about with different tunings and have made my own 4-string cigar box guitar and a baritone guitar. Don't own anything expensive, just a couple of Westfields, a Harley Benton, unbranded Strats, that sort of thing. No band, just happy to muck about making my own songs. And, as my username indicates, I play right-handed guitars flipped over and upside down, like Eric Gales and Albert King. Keeps things interesting!

I don't think I've posted here before - I'm a member of basschat.co.uk, but after playing bass for decades, lately I've been singing and playing mandolin and octave mandolin. I don't actually play guitar, though I have a couple of guitar-shaped objects in my collection - an acoustic guitar bodied octave mandolin, and earlier this year a local guitar builder converted a copy of a Gibson SG to mandolin for me. I'm currently working towards a Rock School grade 2 acoustic guitar exam... with a mandolin!

Hello everyone. I'm from England, recently retired. I'm a long time acoustic player. I prefer to strum the strings while singing the songs. Usually its just Christmas time with the family around and we have a sing along. Lately I have been seeing YT vids and fingerstyle looks like it could be fun. I've tried a few times and never really caught the bug for it. And I recently got given an electric guitar and i would like to learn blues slide. Great to be here.
